Clay A. Alger practices in Shumway Van & Hansen’s litigation department. Mr. Alger graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in 2006 with a bachelor’s of arts in Economics. He then went on to receive his Juris Doctor from the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney College of Law in 2009, where he graduated with high honors. During law school, Mr. Alger served on the Utah Law Review as a senior staff member and published an article in that same journal discussing Utah’s highway dedication doctrine and matters relating to public prescriptive easements. Mr. Alger also earned the CALI Excellence for the Future Award in Administrative Law and the College of Law Outstanding Achievement Award in Property Law.
Prior to joining Shumway Van & Hansen, Mr. Alger gained significant experience as a law clerk for the Utah Attorney General’s Office Litigation Division. Upon admittance to the Utah State Bar, Mr. Alger began a solo practice in Salt Lake City where he practiced primarily criminal defense and family law. He also has experience in public employment law and has represented several clients on appeal to the Utah Court of Appeals and Utah Supreme Court.
Mr. Alger is fluent in Portuguese. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar, running, and spending time with his family.
