The Las Vegas fatal accident took place near Home Depot Drive and Craig Road, when a 27-year-old driver of a Hyundai SUV rear-ended a Ford sedan, causing the sedan to strike a light pole. The 54-year-old male driver of the sedan died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the SUV was arrested and charged with one felony count of DUI with Death.

The other accident was when a motorcyclist driving under the influence rear-ended an SUV at South Decatur Boulevard and West Tropicana Avenue. The SUV was stopped at a red traffic light when the 36-year-old motorcyclist hit it. The motorcyclist was thrown to the road and was soon transported to UMC with critical injuries.

Jennifer Fitzgerald filed a lawsuit last year against the city of Chicago to fight the 678 parking tickets that police put on her car for almost three years. The most notable change is that cameras and electronic devices are allowed in Utah courtrooms.  Utah is joining 37 other states that allow broadcast coverage of trial proceedings, and is now one of the most open states for allowing electronic coverage of the courts.  Utah’s new rule says that court proceedings are open unless a judge can cite, in writing, a good reason to keep them closed.

Smartphones, tablets, and laptops can be used in the courtroom, but cannot be used to take photos or record video. Only one camera operator will be allowed to broadcast, and jurors will not be allowed to see it.

While many a lawyer in Utah probably thinks the open courtroom policy may help educate the public on what goes on in the courtrooms, the new rule also makes Utah lawyers question whether the courtroom will change into more entertainment than legal processes, as seen in the O.J. Simpson case.

Another change to the courts also brings Utah further into the digital age. Mandatory electronic filing began April 1, requiring that all pleadings and other papers filed by attorneys in civil and domestic cases be filed electronically. Mandatory filing begins July 1 of this year for pleadings and other papers filed by attorneys in probate cases. Those people representing themselves are not required to file electronically.

The pedestrian killed was 26-year-old Maria DeAquino. DeAquino crossed the street at State Street and 3605 South from west to east. It was about 7:20 p.m. and she had successfully crossed the southbound lanes of traffic when she was struck by a car traveling north.

DeAquino was treated for injuries at the scene and was then taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
