Utah Lawyers Warn, Be Careful What You Say and Do Online

With the increasing use of social media, there is also an increasing need to think before you speak, text, post, or Facebook friend someone. Utah lawyers are seeing an increasing number of cases dealing with social media.

Recently gang members in New York were apprehended after other members of the gang accepted Facebook “friend” requests from a police officer using an alias. Not only did the gang members friend someone they did not know, but then they also posted statements on Facebook bragging about some alleged criminal activity they were involved in.

The real question is why friend someone you do not know? Utah lawyers warn that for your own safety it is never a good idea to friend someone you do not know – whether you are participating in criminal activity or not. One should always assume that everyone who has access to your information also reads every post and update; therefore, maybe it is best to only post information that you would want a complete stranger (or an officer of the law) to know about you.

Utah lawyers caution that it is especially important for young children to be careful when using social media. There has been a rise in online bullying and “sexting” which can carry criminal punishments for minors and stay on their records.
