Injury Lawyer in Utah Warns no Texting While Driving After Teen Killed When Struck by Alleged Texting Driver: Experienced Lawyers Salt Lake City Residents Trust Can Help With Your Case

June 23, 2016

A 15-year-old teenager, Tommy Clark, was hit from behind by a pickup truck while walking with a friend in Vernal, Utah.  The driver of the pickup, 28-year-old Jeffrey Lloyd Bascom, told investigators he was texting at the time he hit Clark.  Not only is texting while driving

dangerous, it is also illegal, reminds an injury lawyer in Utah.

Clark was thrown about 40 feet through the air and landed next to a barbed wire fence. Clark was taken to Ashley Regional Medical Center and then transferred by helicopter to Primary Children’s Medical Center where he later passed away.  The friend he was waking with was uninjured.

Bascom has a history of traffic violations, including a conviction for alcohol-related reckless driving in 2008.  However, police say there was no evidence that alcohol was a factor in the accident.  In addition to not texting while driving, lawyers Salt Lake City residents rely on say driving under the influence is also against the law.

Bascom also had 10 speeding citations since 2003, with three of those for driving more than 30 miles per hour above the posted speed limit.  It has not yet been determined how fast Bascom was driving when he struck Clark.

Charges have not yet been filed, but if charged with a second-degree felony, there could be a penalty of up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.  An injury lawyer in Utah can help you if you have been hurt in a car accident or if you have made a mistake while driving.  Contact lawyers Salt Lake City can trust with their car accident problems at Shumway Van & Hansen.
