Salt Lake City Criminal Lawyers Look at Crime Trends in Utah

November 24, 2016

The Utah crime rate dropped a little from 2007 to 2011, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety and the Utah Bureau of Criminal Investigation annual Crime in Utah Reports.

For the Utah crime cycle, there were 257 “index” crimes reported within 24 hours in 2007, and that number dropped to 243 in 2011. That is a 5.5 percent decrease for the state.

Index crimes are defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as “offenses of homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft and arson.” The bureau compiles a report each year and includes these categories to create a crime cycle for the state and local agencies.

The breakdown of crimes in Salt Lake County for a population of 1,050,774, were 26 homicides, 452 rapes, 820 robberies, 2,121 aggravated assaults, 6,238 burglaries, 34,630 larcenies, 4,102 motor vehicles thefts, and 151 arsons. There were a total number of 48,540 index crimes and the crime rate per 1,000 people was 46.19.
