What is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage? And Why Do You Need It? If You Are Not Sure, Then You Should Ask a Few Las Vegas Injury Attorneys.

March 1, 2016

Did you know that according to the Nevada Governor’s office, up to 20% of drivers nationwide are uninsured?  That means that if you are in a motor vehicle accident there is a 1 in 5 chance that the at-fault driver will have no coverage to compensate you for your injuries, damaged personal property, time off of work, or repairs to your vehicle. It is bad that the odds of the other person in an accident having insurance coverage aren’t great, but what is worse is that even if the other driver is insured, oftentimes he or she isn’t insured enough.

In the state of Nevada the minimum insurance requirement is only $15,000.00 per person and $30,000.00 per accident. Many times the hospital bill is upwards of $6,000.00 so there is not often much left over for additional costs and expenses. The $15,000.00 in coverage can be eaten up in medical bills as instantly as the occurrence of the accident itself, leaving no money for pain and suffering, time off of work, future treatments and repairs.

Uninsured (UM) or underinsured motorist (UIM) coverage is something that you can purchase from your own insurance company to protect you from these types of situations. If you are hit by someone with little or no insurance then your own UM/UIM policy will kick in and pay out to help with medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other ramifications of your Las Vegas injury. These policies can be waived, but ask any of the Las Vegas injury attorneys around and they will likely recommend having UIM coverage in place at all times.  Uninsured motorist coverage can be the difference in getting the treatments that you need to recover and suffering in pain for a very long time.

If you have been in an accident and need help sorting out your UIM claim, call the caring attorneys at the Las Vegas law office of Shumway Van & Hansen.
