Robert T. Spjute is a partner at our law firm. Mr. Spjute primarily focuses his efforts on the firm’s civil litigation practice group, though his experience allows him to excel in a variety of legal matters. Mr. Spjute earned his two Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Speech Communication from the University of Utah, graduating Magna Cum Laude.

During his experience as an undergraduate Mr. Spjute was on the Dean’s list multiple semesters. He furthered his education at the University of Utah’s S.J. Quinney College of Law and received his Juris Doctor degree with high honors. While at the S.J. Quinney College of Law, he received the CALI award in such classes as Scientific Forensic Evidence taught by current U.S. Tenth Circuit Judge Scott Matheson and Judicial Process taught by former Utah Court of Appeals Judge Judith Billings. Robert was also a recipient of the Order of the Coif award, a Leary Scholar, a Quinney Research Fellow, and the Executive Text Editor for the Utah Environmental Law Review, all awards and honors that reflect on his ethical and knowledgeable approach to the law.

Robert has significant strengths in drafting documents, researching litigation issues and preparing rulings. He is a key component in our successful litigation department within our firm. Before joining the law firm of Shumway Van and Hansen, he gained unique insights into the field of litigation as an intern for Judge Thomas Greene of the Utah Federal District Court as a law clerk with the Utah Attorney General’s Office in the Environment Division, and as a law clerk at the law firm of Winder & Counsel. Following his graduation from law school, Robert worked as a law clerk for nine judges in the Utah Second District Court in both Bountiful and Ogden.

He is conversational in Brazilian Portuguese and is a member of the Great Salt Lake Aquarium Society, of which he is an avid and extremely knowledgeable collector of rare fish. In his spare time Robert enjoys singing, politics, and spending time with his wife and two daughters.
