Utah Lawyer Confirmed by Senate to Utah’s Federal Court

The Senate recently confirmed Utah lawyer Robert Shelby as a federal judge for Utah. Lawyers in Utah are pleased to see the vacancy for federal judge filled after what court officials called a judicial emergency.

Before his confirmation, Shelby worked as a Utah lawyer doing commercial and personal injury litigation. He graduated from the University of Virginia Law School in 1998, clerked for U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Greene, and spent eight years in the Utah Army National Guard.

With cases stacking up, Utah federal court officials said it was imperative that the Senate fill the vacancy soon. The Senate approved Shelby by a voice vote before adjourning until after Election Day.

President Barack Obama nominated Shelby in December 2011. The Senate Judiciary Committee voted in April to support the President’s selection.

Senator Mike Lee from Utah was the only committee member to vote against the nomination, but said it was to protest Obama’s controversial appointments made in January. However, Lee said he supports Shelby and thinks he is very qualified and will be an “outstanding judge.”

Lawyers in Utah agree that he is very qualified and look forward to appearing before Shelby in federal court and wish him the best with his new position.
